Why: Mardi Gras produces up to 2.6 million pounds of trash in our streets, storm drains and landfills in just 10 days of parades. The majority of the waste is cans and bottles that can be recycled and unwanted throws that can be reused to support community members with intellectual disabilities.

RECYCLING STATIONS:

What: During weekend day parades, the public can now recycle aluminum cans, glass and plastic bottles and unwanted parade throws to benefit local non-profits. Staffed recycling stations along Napoleon & St. Charles Ave distribute free throw donation bags, accept them back and act as a hub for recycling receptacles placed along the route.

When: Approx. 10:00am to 7:00pm

  • Saturday. Feb. 22nd - “Freret Day”

  • Sunday Feb. 23rd - “King Arthur Day”

  • Saturday March 1st - “Iris Day”

  • Sunday March 2nd - “Thoth Day”

Why: Capturing infinitely recyclable aluminum, glass to create sand and reusable throws from parade goers helps manage resources and reduces street, storm drain and landfill waste. It also generates $ when cans are turned in to scrap yards for their value and the throws are sorted and resold by local non profits.
