Louisiana made Beignet Mix for making an iconic and delicious New Orleans treat at home.
Functional throw that you can catch and use year after year.
Helps support a local brand & business: Mam Papaul’s.
Sack is made from renewable, biodegradable jute fiber.
Every year tens of millions of dollars are sent abroad to purchase and import parade throws. Wouldn’t it be great if we could keep some of that business here and create jobs for those who need them? We can! Consumable throws, which are cost competitive with disposable plastic throws, promote our Louisiana food culture, support local businesses and provide low skilled work for citizens and volunteers who sticker, stuff and tie the bags. These throws truly are a win, win, win!
“Our blends embody the heritage of New Orleans’ cultures that create the unique cuisine in the swampy south. By preserving the culinary contributions of the French, Spanish, Germans, Africans, and Caribbean Islanders, along with the continued use of native plants and the perfect amount of cayenne and red pepper, Mam Papaul’s creates delicacies that are the epitome of New Orleans style food, meant to satisfy the cajun taste.”
1. In a deep skillet (4 inches or deeper) or deep fryer pre-heat 2-3 inches of cooking oil to 375°.
2. In a large mixing bowl add 4oz Beignet Mix, 1.5 oz. of cold water and mix thoroughly. Mix should pull away from the side of the bowl when thoroughly mixed.
3. While the oil is pre-heating place the dough on a generously floured surface and using a rolling pin roll out to a 1/8 inch thickness and cut into 2 x 3 rectangles. (Hint: Use a pizza cutter to form rectangles.). Set rectangles aside till your cooking oil has completely heated up to 375°.
4. Once oil has reached the desired temperature, fully immerse the rectangles into the oil for another 30 seconds, or until golden brown, making sure to spoon hot oil over the top side of the beignets. Beingets will rise to the surface within the first 5-10 seconds. Flip over and continue cooking for another 30 seconds until golden brown on both sides.
5. Using a large slotted spoon or a pair of tongs remove the cooked beignets from the oil and set aside onto a plate covered with paper towels to drain and cool.
6. Liberally dust with powdered sugar and serve with Coffee or Café au Lait. Makes approximately 6 Beignets.
Jute bags can be repurposed for other uses or composted. For best results cut into smaller scraps before composting. Plastic product bag can be recycled with alternative recycling services such as Terracycle, but should not be placed in curbside recycling bins.
